It didn’t take long for owners of Tesla Motors‘ Model S to abuse its new autopilot software. This week a video was uploaded to YouTube of a Tesla driving down a highway with its driver asleep at the wheel. The unconscionably unsafe act puts new scrutiny on autopilot systems currently skirting regulation.
Considering Tesla’s autopilot disengages when its software feels unable to navigate on its own, it makes us wonder how dangerous these systems are for lazy, ill, or inattentive humans. Tesla’s autopilot system notifies drivers when it switches from autopilot to manual control and will pull over if the driver ignores it too long. However, that doesn’t stop passerby from being slightly terrified by an autonomous vehicle on the road in the meantime.
